Pick up an HCl supplement at your local healthfood store. Look for one that has 650 mg per capsule. These supplements generally have Betaine HCl and Pepsin.
To complete the HCl Challenge, do the following:
Days 1 – 3:
Take 1 HCl capsule with each meal you eat. One with breakfast, lunch and supper for three consecutive days.
Days 4 – 6:
Take 2 HCl capsules with each meal you eat. Two with breakfast, lunch and supper for three consecutive days.
Days 4 – 6:
Take 3 HCl capsules with each meal you eat. Three with breakfast, lunch and supper for three consecutive days.
Every three days you will be increasing by one hydrochloric acid (Betaine/Pepsin) capsule per meal until you feel a warm, sort of a flush in your stomach. This feeling is referred to as an HCl Flush.
The HCL Flush doesn’t feel like a burning sensation. It feels kind of like a niacin flush. Just like a warm heat has rinsed over the outside of your stomach. Once you feel this warm HCl Flush, you will want to reduce the number of capsules you are taking by 1 capsule. This is your optimal dosage.
For example: If you were taking three tablets per meal and you didn’t feel anything and you added in the fourth one and you did feel a flush, then you would back down to three. Three capsules is where you are supposed to be for every meal three months.
About every three months you can stop the HCl supplement for about a week or two. Before starting again, you will want to retest with the HCl Challenge Test to determine if you still need this supplement and at what dosage if you do still need it.
If you take the very first tablet and you feel any kind of pain or burning, then that means the lining of your stomach is compromised, or you may have an ulcer or a hole in your stomach or an active H. Pylori infection, which is a bacterial infection in your stomach. Discontinue the supplement and see your healthcare practitioner to determine what’s going on.
